Sodding FAQs

Sodding your lawn is a great way to improve the look of your landscape and add value to your home. But how do you know what type of sod is right for your lawn?

Sodding GTA is Toronto’s first choice for lawn-sodding services offering professional and affordable lawn care. We are here to answer all your questions before you begin your lawn sodding project so you can feel confident the job is done right.

Can I Put Sod on Top of Existing Grass?

No. To ensure the beauty and lusciousness of your lawn, it is recommended that existing grass and debris be removed. Roots can still grow underneath sod if the previous turf is not removed leading to discoloured patches and inconsistent growth. Sodding GTA will remove the areas of lawn you wish to replace and lay fresh and healthy sod down so that you can enjoy a beautiful lawn for years to come.

What Are The Benefits of Sodding?

There are many reasons to choose sod over grass seed. Many people choose sod because of the quick transformation of their landscape. Seeds can take weeks to grow and can be easily damaged by wind or heavy rain. Sod is easy to manage and more durable. You also have more grass choices and can quickly customize the look of your lawn to give your home instant curb appeal.

How Can You Maintain New Sod After Installation?

Sodding GTA provides homeowners with all the tools and information they need to guarantee their lawn remains healthy and settles into their existing landscape. Water your sod regularly and keep an eye out for lifting or dry patches. Take your time before beginning fertilization or other chemical treatments. Your sod is sensitive to the environment and weather and needs time to adapt to your landscaping. Wait at least a month before fertilizing or treating your lawn to prevent scorching or damage.

When Is the Best Time to Install the Sod?

Sod is versatile meaning it can be installed at any time of year. However, the ideal choice is in the early spring or fall when the temperatures are cooler and the weather is more favourable. The summer can be hot and can cause your sod to dry out or make it difficult to keep up with watering recommendations.

When Should You First Mow Newly Installed Sod?

Give your new sod time to settle. This means avoiding heavy foot or mechanical traffic. Wait until your sod has reached 4 inches before mowing to ensure it has rooted properly. Don’t let anyone unnecessarily walk or play on the lawn for up to a month so that your sod has time to fully settle. Too much foot traffic may cause the sod to lift or create patching.

How Often Should You Water New Sod?

Watering – your new sod needs to be watered regularly. The roots need to take hold of the soil and five to 10 minutes of consistent watering two to three times a day is recommended depending on weather conditions. Keep an eye on your lawn and make sure to watch for dry patches or places where the lawn isn’t settling. Water in the morning or evening to guarantee the water soaks in properly.
